Area Overview

The City of London is a city within a city. It’s often referred to as “the City” or the Square Mile. Despite having a population of just over three thousand, the City is a world-famous business centre to which over 300,000 people commute daily for work. The City is regarded as the second smallest British city by population, after St David’s in Wales.

The area covered by the EC3 postcode comprises the southeastern corner of the City of London. The EC4 postcode covers the southwestern corner. It was referred to as the City as far back as the 16th century, but some historians believe it could even predate the Roman invasion of Britain. The Great Fire of 1666 destroyed 80% of the City and much of it had to be rebuilt. As such, much of the area’s history is reflected in the diverse mix of architectural styles.

The City has very few historical landmarks still intact, but St Paul’s Cathedral and the Royal Exchange are two great examples of beautiful architecture. Today, the high-rise skyscrapers and lofty structures within the financial centre are what make the area notable. 30 St Mary Axe, also known as the Gherkin due to its unorthodox shape, is one of London’s most recognisable buildings.

Geographically, the City sits at the heart of London – a short walk from the West End, Southwark and the vibrant South Bank – and it is bordered by colourful markets at Spitalfields and Brick Lane. It is also home to the London Symphony Orchestra and annual City of London Festival.

Despite being a business centre, the City still has plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars to try. The Perkin Reveller, overlooking the river towards Tower Bridge, serves seasonal British dishes to suit all tastes.

The largest public open space in The City is Finsbury Circus at 2.2 hectares and includes a Lawn Bowls club.

The area’s property market is dominated by purpose-built blocks and warehouse conversions, such as Globe View at High Timber Street sitting directly on the Thames.

The River Thames at the City

Given its central location, there are plenty of activities and attractions to be enjoyed along this stretch of the River Thames. Some highlights include:

  • Tower Bridge
  • The Tower of London
  • Tate Modern, located just over Millennium Bridge on the south banks of the Thames
  • The Golden Hinde, a recreation of Sir Francis Drake’s ship which is docked a few minutes from London Bridge

Transport in the City

The City is served by a vast array of transport networks including:

  • Three rail stations at Liverpool Street, Fenchurch Street and Cannon Street
  • 11 underground stations and 2 DLR stations, all within zone 1
  • Piers for the London River Services at the Thames in the City, Blackfriars Millennium Pier and Tower Millennium Pier
