Area Overview

Hammersmith is a district in west London, located within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Bordered by Kensington, Fulham and Chiswick, the area lies on the north bank of the River Thames. It is linked by Hammersmith Bridge to Barnes in the southwest.

As an area, Hammersmith dates back to the 17th century and until recently it was one of the UK’s major industrial bases.

King Street is Hammersmith’s main shopping street; it is home to the King’s Mall shopping centre, many independent stores, the Town Hall, the Lyric Theatre and a cinema. Riverside Studios cinema, theatre and arts space is currently being redeveloped, due for completion in 2017. Every Thursday, you can buy fresh farm produce and locally sourced goods from Hammersmith farmers’ market.

Eating out is somewhat of an event in Hammersmith, with plenty of independant and chain restaurants and gastropubs to choose from. The Old Ship, which sits on the riverbank, serves award-winning traditional pub food. The legendary River Cafe, at Thames Wharf Studios, is a Michelin-starred restaurant with beautiful river views.

There are also plenty of green spaces to enjoy in Hammersmith, such as the area’s pedestrianised riverside, which is home to a number of walks, rowing clubs and the riverside park of Furnival Gardens. Just off the riverbank is Ravenscourt Park with its tennis courts, basketball court, bowling green and play areas.
