Hampton Wick is a Thames-side area of the London Borough of Richmond. Famous for its market gardens until well into the 20th century, it is now a popular location for commuters. Situated north of the River Thames, the area forms part of Kingston upon Thames.

Hampton Wick is steeped in history, and there is evidence of Roman occupation throughout the area. Around 1219, Kingston Bridge was built, linking the village with Kingston upon Thames. During the 18th century, many of London’s luminaries bought or built themselves country retreats at Hampton Wick. Hampton Court Palace and Gardens is probably the area’s most famous attraction.

Shopping in Hampton Wick is centred around the high street, which has a selection of independent stores, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. There is also a large antiques centre which hosts regular antique markets. A wider selection of high street shops and supermarkets – as well as a shopping centre – can be found at nearby Hampton and Kingston.

Nightlife is laid back, with many pubs and restaurants located on the banks of the river. The Riverside Restaurant, located at the Carlton Mitre Hotel, offers first-class dining with panoramic views of the River Thames. A short stroll takes you to Moidul’s Tandoori, a relaxed restaurant extremely popular with locals. For a quiet pint, try Boater’s Inn, a light and airy pub with a veranda overlooking the river.
