Area Overview

Kingston upon Thames, also simply known as Kingston, is located within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in southwest London. It is the second smallest London Borough after the City of London, and one of only four Royal Boroughs in England and Wales.

Some of the capital’s lowest crime rates, coupled with good schooling and reasonable commuting times, have made Kingston a firm favourite with both families and young professionals.

The town centre in Kingston is historic, with an ancient market area filled with eclectic stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruit and fish. The town was first mentioned in the year 838 and has royal connections dating back to Saxon times. Kingston Antiques Market attracts dealers from all over the world, and is also a favourite filming location for the media: programmes hosted here have included Bargain Hunt and The Bill. There are some excellent shops and boutiques on the high street, as well as plenty of choice at the Bentall Centre Shopping Mall and John Lewis. Also on the Bentall site are a cinema, theatre and other leisure facilities.

“Riverside town centre is a major retail centre, one of the biggest in the UK”

Kingston has a great selection of restaurants both in the town centre and along the river banks. The Charter Quay development has its own piazza where you’ll find Carluccio’s Italian and Brown’s Bar & Brasserie, both friendly places overlooking the River Thames. For a good pint, try The Boaters Inn, a pub which specialises in real ale and fresh seasonal food, set in a stunningly picturesque spot overlooking the river.
