Area Overview

Isleworth is a town located within the London Borough of Hounslow in West London. Isleworth’s original area of settlement, alongside the Thames, is known as “Old Isleworth”. The north-west corner of the town, bordering Osterley to the north and Lampton to the west, is known as “Spring Grove”.

Old Isleworth has Anglo Saxon roots, but did not adopt its modern name until the 18th century. Much of Isleworth became orchards in the 18th century, and then market gardens which supplied London in the 19th century. Lower Square and Church Street, which front onto the Thames, still have buildings dating from these periods.

“… a riverside settlement of ancient origin.”

Shopping in Old Isleworth is centred around the South Street area where small, local shops and plenty of patisseries, delicatessens and cafes can be found. Gelataria Supremo is a traditional coffee shop serving up delicious homemade ice creams and cakes. A wider range of shops can be found at nearby Richmond and Chiswick.

Redlees Park offers great receational space with a large green, tennis courts  and play areas.

Nightlife in Old Isleworth is laid back, with the focus on traditional pubs and small restaurants. The London Apprentice, with its large outside terrace and beautiful river views, is one of London’s most famous riverside pubs and well worth a try. Next to Church Street is The Hilton Hotel at nearby Syon Park with a stylish bar, Marco Pierre White steakhouse as well as a state-of-the-art pool, gym and spa all open to non-guests.

Property in Old Isleworth

The majority of Isleworth was developed in the 1920s and 1930s when art deco factories were springing up along the Great West Road, so there is a good supply of semi-detached houses from the era. Old Isleworth is a picturesque area with an impressive collection of period homes dating back to both the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Church Street, which fronts directly onto the Thames, is one of the most sought-after and expensive streets in the area. Recently, luxury apartment blocks have been built along the riverbank at nearby Brentford and Chiswick, and these are attracting a young, professional crowd.
