Area Overview

Putney is a district in South West London located within the London Borough of Wandsworth. Putney attracts young professionals and families, who live alongside the older generations who have been in the area for years.

Putney is an ancient parish that is first mentioned as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. For centuries Putney was a place where Londoners came for leisure and to enjoy the open spaces and clean air. In 1729 a bridge was built over the Thames to connect Putney to Fulham, and the area was transformed into a commuter suburb and country retreat for the wealthy classes.

“The river and green space give a fresh feel only six miles from town.”

Since the second half of the 19th century, Putney has been one of the most significant centres for rowing in the United Kingdom, and there are around 20 rowing clubs based on the Thames along Putney Embankment. The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race begins at the University Stone, just upstream from Putney Bridge.

Shopping is found along Putney High Street for many high street names, coffee shops and restaurants and at Putney Exchange Shopping Centre which has a good mixture of high street shops and independent boutiques.

Putney has a great selection of restaurants and pubs, many of which are located along the river path. The Dukes Head and the Boathouse, both with beautiful riverside views, serve up real ales and a warm welcome. The Star & Garter is a fantastic waterside bar & restaurant serving a great selection of mezze, tapas and charcuterie. It is also the only bar in the UK to have an in-house cheese maturing room, where you’re invited to check out a vast selection of artisan cheeses from all over Europe.
