Area Overview

Rotherhithe is a beautiful, historic village located in South East London within the London Borough of Southwark. It is situated on a peninsula on the south bank of the Thames and is part of the area known as Docklands. Surrey Quays is the name given to the residential area of Rotherhithe which forms the eastern part of the peninsula.

Believed to be Anglo-Saxon in origin, Rotherhithe was known as a port as far back as the 12th century and then as a shipyard and working docks after Elizabethan times. During the 1980s over 90% of the docks were filled in to make way for an extensive regeneration programme, and the name Surrey Quays was adopted in 1989 as part of the process.

“Modern living is worlds apart from the area’s industrial heritage.”

The Mayflower, one of the oldest pubs on the Thames dating back to 1624, also sits on the riverbank and has beautiful views across the Thames.
