Area Overview

Twickenham is a large suburban town situated ten miles southwest of Central London. It is the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The town is bordered to the south by the River Thames and Eel Pie Island, which is connected to the Twickenham embankment by a narrow footbridge.

Twickenham‘s history extends as far back as a local charter of 704 AD. From Norman times, the area was farmed for several hundred years, while the river provided opportunities for fishing, boatbuilding and trade. During the Industrial Revolution, the area was well-known for gunpowder production – a dangerous industry that declined in the late 19th century. The old Shot Tower, mill sluices and blast embankments can still be seen along the banks of the river.

“Rugby union’s riverside home.”

Shopping in Twickenham is located mainly along Church Street and comprises a mix of high street names, independent stores, cafes and delicatessens. Around St Margaret’s station there are coffee shops, a cheese shop and a traditional family butcher. Nightlife is fairly low key and focuses on traditional pubs and good restaurants. The White Swan is a 17th century pub that sits above the shallow slope to the Thames and enjoys both a sunny veranda off the bar and a pretty paved garden right on the river. The Barmy Arms is a popular rugby pub overlooking the river and Eel Pie Island.

Twickenham is probably best known for its sporting links and is home to the headquarters of the Rugby Football Union and Twickenham Rugby Stadium. Harlequins, a rugby union club, and London Broncos, a rugby league club, play at the Twickenham Stoop.
