Area overview

Battersea is a district located within the London Borough of Wandsworth, situated on the south side of the River Thames. The area has Anglo-Saxon roots and takes its name from the old village of Battersea, a historic island settlement on the river.

Battersea has a small-town atmosphere with several community groups – including The Battersea Society, which works to promote community issues and has a wide range of meetings and events. The area has one of the highest concentrations of young families in Europe, earning it the nickname “Nappy Valley”. Schooling in the area is excellent, with some schools achieving “Outstanding” Ofsted ratings.

“Riverside Battersea Park is home to a zoo and the London Peace Pagoda.”

Shopping in Battersea is centred around Northcote Road, where local shops and independent traders sit alongside well-known high street stores. Northcote Road Market is great for locally sourced goods, and there’s also the Antiques Market, which offers two floors of antiques and collectibles.

Battersea has a bustling cafe culture and plenty of regional delicatessens to try. Il Molino, on Battersea Park Road, is rumoured to sell the best (and most delicious) gluten-free treats in London. There are also some great restaurants in the area including Nancy Lam’s Enak Enak, where you can try Indonesian-inspired dishes like barbecue prawns and rendang. Gordon Ramsey’s London House opened in Battersea Square to great reviews in 2014. Nightlife is varied and includes a good mix of traditional pubs and livelier bars. If you fancy an upmarket night out, try Lost Angel or Alchemist, both contemporary cocktail bars with dance floors and garden seating areas.
