Area Overview

Molesey is a town located within the borough of Elmbridge in Surrey. There are two distinct areas in the town: East Molesey and West Molesey. Both are situated between the Thames to the north and the river Mole and some of London’s largest reservoirs to the south and west.

The earliest record of a settlement in Molesey appears in a seventh-century charter, shortly after Chertsey Abbey was founded in AD 666. The area was also recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, and some fine examples of medieval architecture can still be seen in the area. The area has historically been used as agricultural and grazing land, often supplying goods to the neighbouring towns. East and West Molesey are traditionally divided by the Molesey Stone, located outside Molesey Library on Walton Road.

West Molesey is pretty and green and has a traditional village feel. Cafes, restaurants, boutiques and antiques shops are clustered in the streets around the station. East Molesey has a mix of cafes, small shops, a large supermarket, and chain restaurants like Pizza Express. A wider range of shops, departments stores and street market can be found just a short bus ride away in Kingston.
