Area Overview

Mortlake is located within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is situated on the south bank of the River Thames between Kew and Barnes, with East Sheen inland to the south.

Mortlake is a historic area, mentioned as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. Since 1845, the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race has had its finish point at Mortlake, marked by the University Boat Race stone just downstream of Chiswick Bridge. As such, the stretch of the Thames at Mortlake is popular with rowers.

“popular with young families for its streets of cottages”

Shopping is centred around the high street and comprises a good selection of local shops and independent stores and boutiques – with a wider range of shops being found in nearly Barnes. Weekly farmers’ markets are held locally at Barnes and Chiswick.

Nightlife is fairly low key, but there are a few great restaurants and bars to try. The Depot Riverside Restaurant and Bar, located on the riverbank, offers modern European cuisine and is popular with locals. The Ship pub, just a short stroll along the river path, serves real ales and hosts entertainment nights.

Property in Mortlake mainly comprises small Victorian terraces and period conversions, tends to be priced lower than neighbouring Barnes and Kew. Many properties have quirky elements, lush gardens and narrow alleyways leading from the towpath back into the town. Mortlake is often described by its residents as a part of London that harks back to a forgotten time. Recently, new apartments have been built along the banks of the Thames. Waterside developments, like Parliament Mews, Dukes Court and Tideway Wharf offer direct views across the river.
