Area Overview

Pimlico is a small pocket of central London located within the City of Westminster. Bounded by the Thames to the south, much of Pimlico is classed as a conservation area and has more than 350 Grade II listed buildings and several Grade II listed churches. The Guardian recently described it as a “magical fragment of London left over from the days of Mary Poppins”.

Originally known as Ebury, Pimlico adopted its modern name during the late 17th century when the area’s freehold was sold. Following the decline of the West End after the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London, Pimlico became a popular location for development. Many of London’s wealthy businessmen and politicians settled in the area because of its close proximity to the Houses of Parliament. Following its designation as a conservation area in 1968, Pimlico has seen extensive regeneration and is now a much sought-after place in which to live.

Pimlico has its own selection of small shops, cafes and restaurants. Pimlico Road is where you’ll find exquisite interior design shops and niche boutiques such as Ammonite 2000, a supplier of the finest fossils and minerals from all over the world. It is also ideally located to enjoy all the facilities of nearby Westminster, Belgravia and Sloane Square. On Saturday mornings, the Pimlico Farmers’ Market opens up in Orange Square, selling seafood, bakery items, organic vegetables and fresh fruit.

Pimlico and the surrounding area are awash with trendy bars, music clubs, gourmet restaurants and gastropubs. Many of the best can be found along the river path. The Riverside Bar & Restaurant, located within the St George’s Wharf development, offers high-quality dining and heated outside terraces with stunning river views. The Morpeth Arms is a traditional old London boozer located on the Thames path which serves up real cask ales and a good selection of wines. They also have an upstairs “spy room”, which has panoramic views across the river.

Pimlico is a tranquil, green area that has become synonymous with white, columned houses rising from sleepy sidewalks. It is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the City, and as such is a firm favourite with professionals who want to leave their hectic lives at the office. The largest and most expensive houses are located within the garden squares of Eccleston, Warwick and St George’s, as well as on Belgrave Road and St George’s Drive.

Grosvenor Waterside is one of the new luxury developments being built along the banks of the Thames, and apartments there benefit from beautiful river views as well as plenty of on-site leisure facilities.

  • Tate Britain, located on the river bank and just a short boat ride across the Thames to the Tate Modern

  • Regular bus routes include the 24 to Hampstead Heath and the 360 to Elephant and Castle
