Area Overview

Sunbury-on-Thames, also known as Sunbury, is a town in the Surrey borough of Spelthorne. It lies just outside of Greater London, adjacent to the London Boroughs of Hounslow and Richmond upon Thames. It is flanked on the south by the River Thames.

Sunbury-on-Thames is a historic area which dates back to at least the Bronze Age of the 10th century. Sunbury-on-Thames has two main areas – Lower Sunbury and Sunbury Common – divided by the M3 motorway. Lower Sunbury, colloquially known as Sunbury Village, borders the River Thames in the south and contains much of the area’s schools and parkland. To the north is Sunbury Common where many of Sunbury’s businesses are located.

Sunbury Village has a small selection of local shops and independent stores centred around the village green area. There are also a few delicatessens and cafes to try, including Cafe Capriccio on Green Street – which offers a warm welcome and some great homemade cakes and coffees. There is also a leisure centre as well as rugby and football pitches. Sunbury Common has a modestly sized shopping centre that includes high street names like Marks & Spencer, Halfords and Laura Ashley. There is also a large supermarket nearby. The local Queen Mary Reservoir, which was constructed in 1925, is home to a sailing club and watersports centre.

“…a real hidden gem with a number of habitable islands.”

Nightlife in Sunbury-on-Thames is fairly laid back and low key, and focuses on traditional pubs and a selection of good gastropubs and restaurants. Indian Zest on Thames Street serves up modern Indian cuisine and is filled with Indian artefacts and polo memorabilia. The Magpie, situated right on the river, serves up a great selection of drinks and food, and has an amazing garden terrace so close to the river that you can moor your boat there.
