Vauxhall is a residential area located within the London Borough of Lambeth which is bordered by Kennington, Stockwell and Clapham.

Vauxhall was once located within the historic county of Surrey and has given its name to the Vauxhall Motors car manufacturer which originated in the area. Until the 19th century Vauxhall was made up of agricultural land and market gardens that provided produce for the surrounding areas.

Vauxhall has a young and lively atmosphere which attracts young professionals – especially to the new luxury developments along the riverbanks. Many MPs and civil servants choose Vauxhall as it’s within easy walking distance of the Houses of Parliament and Whitehall. Vauxhall is known for being an open-minded and tolerant area with a well-established gay community and gay pub and club scene.

Nightlife is a bustling affair, with a plethora of music bars, pubs, cabaret venues and after-hours clubs. For a more relaxed drink, head to one of the great bars or restaurants situated along the riverbank. The Riverside Bar & Restaurant, located inside the St George Wharf complex on the banks of the river, has amazing views across the water and over London’s skyline. Aqua River Brasserie serves up bistro-style dishes and has a great terrace where you can take in the wonderful views across the Thames.

Many of Vauxhall’s streets were destroyed during the bombing raids of World War II and as a result much of the area’s property comprises ex-Local Authority housing. The larger, most desirable properties are located to the Fentiman Road and Heyford Avenue areas while a mixture of reasonably priced flat conversions and purpose-built apartment blocks can be found closer to the high street. The new St. George Wharf development at Vauxhall Bridge, with its state-of-the-art on-site facilities, bars and restaurants, is hugely popular for those in search of contemporary, luxury living with spectacular river views.
