Area Overview

  • Westminster lies on the north bank of the River Thames and is home to some of London’s most famous landmarks, including the Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral. As such, the area is bustling and exciting throughout the year.

Westminster is synonymous with politics and is the centre of the UK Government. Parliament is located in the Palace of Westminster, and most of the major Government ministries are situated on Victoria Street, Great Smith Street or Whitehall. As a result many MPs and civil servants live in the area.

The SW1, W2 and WC2 areas of Westminster are home to great shopping and eating facilities, as well as many theatres and playhouses. The Adelphi Theatre on The Strand and The Aldwych Theatre at Aldwych both regularly host well-known musicals and shows.  There are also plenty of museums and galleries to visit, including the National Portrait Gallery, Clarence House, and Jay Joplin’s pioneering White Cube Gallery.

“…created, in 1869, by Sir Joseph Bazalgette out of Fore Street, numerous small timber and boat-building yards and reclaimed land.”

As well as being perfectly situated to enjoy the shopping at Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Oxford Street, there is a good mix of shops in Westminster itself. High street names like House of Fraser sit alongside quirky boutiques and independent stores. The new Cardinal Walk retail centre close to Victoria station has a wider range of high street brands such as TopShop and Zara. Nearby Covent Garden has an array of street performers, eclectic shops and market stalls, theatres, and some of the best vegetarian restaurants in London. In W2, the top end of Queensway is dominated by the huge Whiteleys shopping centre – where many of the familiar high street names can be found, together with a choice of restaurants and a multi-screen cinema.

Nightlife in Westminster and the surrounding areas is bustling, lively and caters for all tastes. Alongside some of the capital’s oldest pubs sit swanky cocktail bars and trendy music clubs. Pubs and restaurants are dotted right along the banks of Thames at Westminster, and offer beautiful views across the water towards the City. One great example is The Morpeth Arms, a traditional Victorian London pub built in 1845 on the site of the original prison cells of Millbank penitentiary. It is situated along historic Millbank and has stunning views across the river.

Property in Westminster

The SW1 section of Westminster is a tranquil, green area that is known for its white, columned houses. The largest and most expensive houses are located within the garden squares of Eccleston, Warwick and St George’s, as well as on Belgrave Road and St George’s Drive. Along the riverbanks, Grosvenor Waterside at Pimlico is just one of the new luxury developments being built along the Thames, and apartments there benefit from beautiful river views as well as plenty of on-site leisure facilities.

The W2 section of Westminster covers Paddington, Bayswater, Hyde Park and Westbourne Green, as well as parts of Little Venice and Notting Hill. This area is within easy walking distance of all the amenities the City has to offer. Properties along Hyde Park Place and Leinster Road are particularly exclusive, and they have impressive views over the adjacent park and gardens.

The WC2 section of Westminster overlaps with the London Borough of Camden and includes King’s Cross, Drury Lane, Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Charing Cross. Much of the property on offer here comprises expensive, high-end flats and luxury apartments like those found at the Saint Giles Piazza development.
