Area Overview

Hampton is a suburban area centred on an old village on the north bank of the River Thames, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.  It adjoins Bushy Park and is west of Kingston upon Thames.

Hampton is a historic area, and its name may come from the Anglo-Saxon words “hamm”, meaning an enclosure in the bend of a river, and “ton”, meaning farmstead or settlement. The riverside area, above Molesey Lock, has many beautiful period buildings including Garrick’s House and Shakespeare’s Temple.

“suburban area with leading independent schools”

Popular primary schools with “outstanding” Ofsted ratings and two of the capital’s top private secondary schools make the area a firm favourite with families. The National Physical Laboratory, located on the edge of Bushy Park, is the area’s largest employer, with many young scientists and professionals buying or renting nearby.

Shopping in Hampton is centred around the Station Road area, which has a selection of independent stores, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. The high street is also home to a popular heated lido. A wider selection of high street shops, supermarkets, and a shopping centre can be found at nearby Kingston.

Nightlife in Hampton is laid back, with many pubs and restaurants located on the banks of the river. The Riverside Restaurant, located at the Carlton Mitre Hotel, offers first-class dining with panoramic views of the River Thames. For relaxed drinks in a friendly atmosphere with beautiful water vistas, try the Bell Inn.
